Hawaiʻi Island United Way Board of Directors Seeks New Board Members

Aloha Prospective Hawaiʻi Island United Way Board Member,


Mahalo for your interest in joining the Hawaiʻi Island United Way (HIUW) Board of Directors. Our mission is to unite people, organizations, and resources to build a healthier Community. Our organization is almost 60 years old. We are at a pivotal moment in our history and are seeking board members who are committed to the mission of our organization and are eager to help us navigate the challenges and opportunities of our current context.


Commitment:

1.Board meeting every other month. No more than 1.5 hours
2. Make an annual monetary donation of any amount to HIUW campaign or recruit other/s to donate any monetary amount to HIUW annual campaign.
 

Venue: 

Most of our meetings are virtual. However, our annual meeting in June is always in person with a hybrid option.


Duties of the Board of Directors (from bylaws)
The Board of Directors shall have the entire management of the affairs of this corporation and shall establish policies and objectives. Without limiting the foregoing, the Board of Directors shall review and take final action regarding the following matters:
1. Election of its Officers.
2. Election of the members (other than the ex officio members) of the Executive Committee.
3. Approval of the Chair’s appointment of Chairs of the Community Building, Finance, Labor Participation, Marketing and Communications, Campaign, Human Resources, Bylaws, Strategic Management, Nominating and Planned Giving Committees.
4. Setting the annual campaign goal.
5. Review and approval of contracts with partners.
6. Admission of new agencies and agency participation for the ensuing year.
7. Allocations for the ensuing year.
8. Approval of the operating budget for the Hawaii Island United Way, Inc.
9. Appointment of the President, Chief Professional Officer (CPO).
10. Designation of the volunteer person to serve on the Board of Directors of the United Way Statewide Association of Hawaii, such person to meet the minimum qualifications of having served on the HIUW Board of Directors within the past three years.


Election and Terms (from bylaws)
The elected Directors shall be chosen from the candidates nominated as provided in Article XI, Section 1 of these bylaws. A person having served two consecutive three-year terms on the Board of Directors shall be eligible for election to the Board after a one-year absence from the Board as an elected member. An exception to the prohibition of being elected to more than two consecutive terms shall be afforded to those Directors elected to serve as Campaign Chair, Vice-Chair, or Chair and to the Director nominated to serve as the Hawaii State AFL-CIO official representative on the Board of Directors, provided that the nominee’s term be limited to a maximum of three consecutive additional years on the Board.

This is not typically a hotly contested election, and we are looking to bring 4-6 new members onboard.

Anticipate receiving 1-2 board-related emails per week. Most are informational/low time-commitment.
